Biography and expertise

Prof Ed Burton leads the Environmental Geochemistry & Mineralogy group at Southern Cross University. This group explores metal(loid)-mineral-microbe interactions in environmental systems by integrating laboratory experiments, field studies and cutting-edge synchrotron-based X-ray techniques.

This approach has produced major new discoveries in understanding iron mineralogy, sulfur cycling, metal(loid) dynamics and water quality in diverse geo-environments (including acid sulfate soils, contaminated land, bushfire-impacted landscapes, and legacy mine sites).

Ed is a member of SCU's Research Clusters:

  • ZeroWaste
  • Catchments, Coasts and Communities

Ed's work contributes to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals
