Abstract

The literature on business and sustainability has, until recently, not only been dominated by data gathered from large enterprises but also by mono-method approaches, despite being criticised for their lack of methodological rigour and lack of generalisability and/or low response rates; difficulties that may be reduced by combing different methods. Extant literature over the past 20 years in the field of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the environment has been reviewed. Relevant statistics related to the mapping of the methodological landscape in the field, is provided. An identified emergence of mixed methods since the late 1990s is seen as an interesting attempt to bring a more pluralistic methodological approach towards SME and Environment research. The editors further note that the adoption of mixed methods in SME and Environment research does not seem to be limited to Europe where it originated but is now growing across Asia, Africa and the Americas.
