Abstract
A shift is occurring in Australia with commitment amongst the business leaders, academic and institutional stakeholders, to build a more sustainable future in line with the UN SDGs. The extent to which this changing landscape is influencing change in the Australian SME sector has been the focus of a purposively-designed longitudinal mixed method study in Melbourne. This fluid nature of the mixed method longitudinal design, however, also has philosophical implications which are addressed in this chapter. It is not just methodology that the researcher must be aware of, to eventuate a mixed method research design, but an awareness of one's philosophical perspective also matters. Without this coupling of the qualitative investigation to the descriptive statistics obtained from the initial quantitative survey, the researcher cannot capture the ‘reality’ of the owner/manager's mind. Otherwise, the survey alone will only capture the tip of the iceberg.
