Biography

Steve Purcell is a Professor of Marine Science and Management within the School of Environment, Science and Engineering through the National Marine Science Centre, and a member of the Reefs and Oceans Research Cluster, Southern Cross University. He is responsible for teaching, research and student supervision in marine science. Steve has led marine ecology and fisheries projects on fishes, sea cucumbers, marine snails and giant clams in Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Research

Professor Purcell's research specialises in sea ranching, fisheries management, fisheries ecology and marine conservation. His work has a focus on sea cucumbers, including their ecology, trade, fisheries and conservation.

Teaching and Supervising

Professor Purcell teaches into the Bachelor of Marine Science and Management program at SCU, leading the units Fisheries and Marine Parks Management,Scientific Data Management and Analysis and the Integrated Project and assists teaching Data Collection and Quantitative Analysis. His responsibilities include supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD students working on reef ecology, fisheries, marine animal ecology and conservation.
