Biography

Marianne is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and is one of the founding members of the Sustainability Environment and Arts in Education (SEAE) Research Centre. Marianne is passionate about inspiring learners in science, sustainability and the environment and providing platforms for their voices to be heard.

Research

Mariannes' approach to research (and teaching) is to interrogate and advance socioecology and posthumanism within a science education context, where classical science education is disrupted, and new paradigms are promoted, within the current critical period surrounding climate change. With a posthuman lens all things are entangled rather than humans being perceived as separate from nature. Central to this thinking is how human actions impact Earth’s dynamic systems. Marianne’s research focus areas include school/university partnership programs in teacher education, school students’ attitudes to, and interest in, science and child/youth framed, arts-based research, in the area of sustainability, science and the environment.

Community engagement

Marianne has established strong partnerships with schools in the regions surrounding Southern Cross university campuses. She pioneered the school-based delivery of science and technology in the Faculty of Education (FOE) where learning is situated in authentic school settings and schools are pivotal partners in teacher education and the preparation of STEM-ready teachers.

Supervision

Marianne has supervised PhD and Honours candidates through to completion and is currently supervising PhD candidates and Doctor of Education candidates.

Teaching

Marianne's teaching/learning is a central focus in her research endeavours. This focus is further supported by her commitment and contribution to the education profession particularly in the areas of science, sustainability and the environment and school university partnership approaches to science teacher education.
