Ethical Research Involving Children
In this brief, I employ an Afrocentric perspective to interrogate how the universalisation of white childhood, erases the social category childhood and accentuates loss of dignity for those children whose life experience is not white or Eurocentric. Starting here allows us for example, to investigate, as Bryan Mukandi asks, at what point is the dignity of the Black and/or Indigenous Child eroded to the point where criminalisation is the marker of identity left? What are the ethics (or lack thereof) of such reductionist identities and what is the role of dignity in this conversation?
