Biography

Judith is a biogeochemist with a special research interest in greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, N2O) emissions, carbon and nitrogen cycling in aquatic ecosystems and particularly in coastal ocean ecosystems including 'blue carbon' ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses.

Judith's research is largely directed towards understanding how carbon and nitrogen are biogeochemically cycled across the land-ocean aquatic continuum and how human activities alter these fluxes. More specifically, her research is aimed at assessing how human alterations have modified the exchange of carbon and nutrients between land, freshwater bodies, wetlands, coastal and ocean ecosystems.

Judith is a member of SCU's Research Clusters:

  • Reefs and Oceans
  • Catchments, Coasts and Communities

Judith’s work contributes to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals

Research

Judith's current research topics include:

  • Quantifying water-air, sediment-air, and net ecosystems greenhouse gas fluxes at local, regional, and global scales
  • Investigating gas transfer velocities of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) at the water-air interface
  • Quantifying lateral inorganic and organic carbon fluxes between riverine, coastal and ocean ecosystems
  • Assessing the role of ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems to mitigate climate change
  • Coupling between inorganic and organic carbon cycling pathways, biological processes, groundwater-surface water interactions to reveal drivers of aquatic greenhouse gas fluxes
