Biography

Joanne has a long and distinguished career in physiotherapy and higher education. She is currently enthusiastically engaged in physiotherapy education and research as part of the new program of study offered at Southern Cross University.

Research

Joanne’s diverse research profile spans musculoskeletal injuries, strength training, Indigenous tobacco cessation and higher education. Jo’s current research focuses on teaching and learning outcomes associated with an intensive, blended delivery model for physiotherapy curriculum and digital options to support health care delivery.

Community engagement

Joanne regularly promotes the physiotherapy program that provides new opportunities for students and the community across the Coffs Coast and Northern Rivers. Jo is currently engaged as a community supporter to assist with the Coffs Musculoskeletal Network (Coffs MSN), a professional development initiative for musculoskeletal health practitioners.

Supervision

Jo has supervised/ co-supervised numerous honours and post-graduate research students in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation topics.

Teaching

Joanne is an academic lead for the new physiotherapy degree. She is the unit assessor for the Introduction to Physiotherapy and is developing musculoskeletal units of study. Jo has extensive experience in curriculum development and delivery focused on evidence-based approaches to learning and teaching in health sciences.

Other

Joanne was recently with SCU’s Centre of Teaching and Learning, leading curriculum transition and GenAI initiatives to support staff and students. Jo’s current focus for SoLT includes programmatic assessment, GenAI literacies, and embedding cultural capabilities. Jo is also a registered physiotherapist and a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
