Darlene Rotumah is an Aboriginal (Bundjalung) and South Sea Islander Australian and a lecturer at Gnibi Wandarahn College of Indigenous Australian Peoples’ Gold Coast Campus. Her Doctorate focused on the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander identified health workforce, with a focus on how they navigate the cultural interface.
Previously she worked in community as an Aboriginal health worker and counsellor, during which time she gained experience as a both a researcher and a research participant.
Darlene's work contributes to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals
Research
Her approach to research is deeply rooted in her cultural values, traditions and connection to the land. She believes in the importance of conducting research that respects and acknowledges Indigenous Knowledge systems, worldviews, perspectives and protocols.
Community engagement
Darlene's work adds to teaching, research and community knowledge and content enhancing social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities.
Supervision
Darlene is a co-supervisor in a higher degree supervisory team.
Teaching
Darlene uses Aboriginal learning techniques to provide a safe environment where all students are invited to ask questions, share and take risks.
