Abstract
1/15 Ross St is part of a portfolio 'Exploring Comprovisation in Site Specific Dance Works'. The three musical works in this portfolio demonstrate innovative techniques and performance practice within the field of Sound Design for contemporary dance performance. Each work is composed/performed by musician/sound artist Barry Hill and accompanies three site specific dance works by VK Dance Collective and Roundabout Theatre Company at significant regional art festivals.
1/15 Ross St features music for solo electric guitar and electronics. The musician is situated onstage and is a nonverbal theatrical character/narrator. The site specific dance work uses a ‘Hills Hoist’ prop as a key metaphor symbolising the mundane in contemporary Australian urban culture.
1/15 Ross St was funded by ARTS NSW and debuted at the 2017 Crack Theatre Festival in Newcastle. It was performed again at Dancehouse Melbourne in 2019. The performance by VK Dance Collective was described as “fun and unconventional; audiences feel like peeping toms, glancing over the hedge observing some obscure, intriguing scenes”.
