Abstract
Narrow reading – reading a series of thematically-related texts – was advocated by Krashen (2004) as an effective technique for promoting vocabulary acquisition. While evidence supporting this technique abounds in corpus-based research, very few empirical studies have been conducted to examine how effective it is in helping learner improve vocabulary learning. The present study, therefore, examined the effects of narrow reading on vocabulary learning by employing an experimental design that compared performance of narrow readers on different vocabulary measures of the post-tests and delayed post-tests with that of students under normal reading condition. Results of a series of independent samples t-tests suggested that narrow readers not only learned more new words but were also better able to retain those words in their long term memory. Results of the study are explained in consideration of previous research.
