School education can reveal aspects of a community's values, in that which it wishes to pass on to the future. In the first half of the twentieth century it may have been the main mode of cultural transmission. In such troubled times, dealing with two great Wars, this paper traces the music resources recommended for teaching - the sequence of required syllabuses and the supportive School Magazine - and despite the jingoism finds hope.
