Abstract
University teaching and learning has traditionally taken place over 12-16 week sessions, often with a standard delivery model including lectures and tutorials. While some higher education providers have moved away from a traditional teacher-centred model (Samarawickrema & Cleary, 2021; Thalluri & Penman, 2018), institution-wide change to the duration, frequency, and underpinning pedagogy of unit delivery remains rare in the Australian higher education sector. This presentation discusses the design and implementation of a distinctive new institution-wide delivery model: the Southern Cross Model. In the Southern Cross model, students complete up to two units across six-week teaching terms. The model's curriculum is founded upon principles of active learning and engages students in two forms of study: self-access learning through media-rich, interactive and responsive online modules; and active, guided class learning. This presentation explains the background to the Southern Cross Model, presents examples of the model's curriculum, and outlines preliminary impacts and implications for Australian higher education.
