Abstract
Policy and program initiatives can enhance inclusion for diverse higher education cohorts. However, curriculum reform across a whole institution is another strategy for creating more inclusive education, with the potential for catalysing powerful and long-term change. This presentation examines how immersive block models can impact success, satisfaction and wellbeing among international students studying in anglophone countries. These models differ from traditional approaches by enabling students to focus on 1–2 units over 4–8 weeks, while engaging in active learning pedagogies (Roche et al., 2024). Such models have been implemented in universities in Australia (Goode et al., 2023; Loton et al., 2022), the United Kingdom (Buck & Tyrell, 2022), and North America (Konjarski et al., 2024). The presentation will overview the rationale, principles and impacts of immersive block learning across multiple contexts globally, and then examine outcomes for undergraduate international students at a regional Australian university. Data across three years indicate strong gains in student success, grade point averages, and satisfaction across multiple disciplines, including science, IT, business and health. We also explore global educational partners’ views on immersive block teaching and learning. Immersive block models may be a powerful way to create more inclusive education across whole institutions.
