Abstract
In higher education, persistent gaps in retention and completion remain for students from underrecognised backgrounds. In response, Southern Cross University, Australia, has
implemented an immersive block model: a whole-of-institution curriculum reform combining six-week terms with active and guided blended learning. This systemic redesign aimed to reduce cognitive load and increase retention for diverse students known as the ‘new majority’. Institutional data reveal a 16-percentage point decrease in attrition since the model’s introduction. This case study demonstrates how holistic curriculum reform can drive equity and retention at scale, offering practical insights for institutions seeking innovative, evidence-informed approaches that transform student outcomes.
