Abstract
It is argued in this chapter that our values help to lead individuals to an understanding of the purpose of their lives and to overcome obstacles that can get in the way of achieving this purpose. The chapter explores goals for personal life, for society, and for the environment. Such an understanding of a goal-focused life is needed if we are to become persons of good character. One important goal is to develop a sense of self-identity, a sense of ‘Who am I?’ The practice of the Education in Human Values (EHV) helps to remove confusions and contradictions around the goals of life and brings harmony to any individual's thoughts, behaviours, and actions.
