Biography

Nicole Thompson is a Lecturer and Unit Assessor in the School of Education at Southern Cross University. She has over 15 years of professional experience in early childhood education and leadership, including work as a Kindergarten Director and in sector-wide professional development. Nicole is currently completing a Master of Education (Research), with a focus on the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in early childhood education, with plans to continue into PhD study.

Research

Nicole’s research interests focus on how educators can critically and ethically engage with emerging technologies to support high-quality early childhood pedagogy and practice. Her work investigates the intersection of GenAI with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and National Quality Standard (NQS), with an emphasis on reducing workload, enhancing critical reflection, and supporting sustainable professional practice.

Community engagement

Nicole has worked in collaboration with peak early childhood organisations and continues to engage with educators, directors, and policy stakeholders to translate research into practice. She is passionate about supporting the workforce to navigate digital transformation while maintaining a focus on children’s rights, wellbeing, and quality learning environments.

Teaching

Nicole teaches across initial teacher education units in early childhood, with a particular focus on curriculum, pedagogy, and professional practice. She is committed to innovative, student-centred teaching that bridges theory and practice, preparing pre-service teachers to meet the demands of contemporary early childhood education.
