Biography

Dr Karen Skilling recently moved to Southern Cross University (Gold Coast campus, Australia) from the Department of Education, University of Oxford (where she remains an Honorary Research Fellow and an Honorary Fellowship at Kellogg College). At SCU, Karen is a professor of Educational Leadership and Chair of Discipline for Teacher Professional Learning. She is the leader of TeachLab, a research group with members whose research is focused on teacher improvements and students learning outcomes.

Research

Karen's research interests include: student engagement and motivation in mathematics; teacher beliefs and practices for promoting student engagement (cognitive, affective/emotional and behavioural); integrated STEM learning and activities and interdisciplinary applications; and vignette methods. Karen is a journal editor for Teaching Education (TEJ) and Research in Mathematics Education (RME) and sits on the Motivation and Learning SIG of AARE. She is the leader of WP3 of the SEMPER Project based in the region of Western Norway and is investigating teacher self-efficacy in respect of mathematics, involving five schools and regional stakeholders which aims to benefit students in their communities.
