Biography

Associate Professor David Lloyd, came to Southern Cross University after ten years as a senior manager with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in Townsville. Dr. Lloyd has extensive community development experience, in areas ranging from remote aboriginal communities to the Solomon Islands, Indonesia, East Timor, Tonga, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Research

Professor Dr. Lloyd is an experienced researcher in both qualitative and quantitative methods, with publications on land-use conflicts. He has worked on AusAID and ACIAR projects in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, PNG, and Fiji, focusing on poverty, coffee production, and sustainable beekeeping—particularly empowering women and families. His current ACIAR project aims to improve technical, business, and disease management practices in smallholder beekeeping. Beyond his research, Dr. Lloyd is passionate about integrating Indigenous knowledge into environmental management. He produced the SBS documentary Saltwater People and regularly shares science and environmental insights on ABC Radio.

Teaching

Dr. Lloyd lectures in Protected Area Management and leads the Bees for Sustainable Livelihoods Group at Southern Cross University.
