Abstract
Epistemic reflexivity in teaching to/for/about diversity in teacher education
In this video, we're going to talk about an ARC funded research project focused on diversity and teacher education. Research tells us that teachers feel underprepared to work with diverse groups of children in their classrooms. Across this project, we've been investigating what it means to prepare future teachers for the reality of complex and fundamentally diverse classrooms.
In this first of a three-part series of videos, we will introduce you the new interdisciplinary framework, called epistemic reflexivity for teacher education. This framework combines sociology, psychology and anti-essentialist perspectives on diversity to visualize the kinds of abilities and critical thinking skills that teachers need in today’s super diverse classrooms. We argue in the video that different sources of knowledge, ways of knowing, and bodies of research can be drawn upon and integrated by teacher educators to create teachers who are better prepared and more confident, more optimistic, and more visionary about the possibilities of working in our diverse classrooms. This is called teaching for diversity which goes beyond the tips and tricks (teaching to diversity - teaching strategies and teaching about diversity - core content about e.g., disabilities) to prepare future teachers to developing a deeper understanding and critical thinking to support a social justice agenda.
