Abstract
In this thesis, I record and document the process involved in the composition and recording of music in an accompanying musical project, a jazz album, Just Before Dawn, and a pop album, Liquid, and theorise the relationship of this creative endeavour with broader concepts of improvisation.
The project consists of two albums - Compact Discs (recorded works): the first album, Liquid, is a collection of original compositions in a range of contemporary popular genres including funk, country and pop, the second album, Just Before Dawn, is abroad collection of jazz repertoire that includes jazz standards, two rearrangements of popular songs and jazz repertoire beyond the scope of standards for example the compositions by Cassandra Wilson and Dominique Eade.
