Abstract
The Victorian Allied Health Workforce Research Program (the Program) aims to contribute to the evidence base about 27 selected Victorian allied health professions in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in Victoria. The data will be used to inform the policies and programs of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), provide a platform of evidence on which to build further understanding and development of the allied health workforce as well as guide any improvements to the associated education and training system. The first stage of the Program involved carrying out an environmental scan of each of the 27 professions. This was a substantial scoping exercise designed to ascertain existing levels of data, information resources and contexts for each profession to assist with future data collection for the Program and other planning activities. Available data and information related to each of the 27 professions was reviewed. Data sources included: • published documents from professional associations and other relevant sources • workforce profiles developed by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services • datasets from sources including but not limited to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Health Workforce Australia, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Department of Education and Training and the National Centre for Vocational Education Research In addition, professional associations representing each of the 27 professions were asked to complete an online questionnaire to identify current and future workforce issues and key data or research relating to their workforce. The data was analysed to develop a snapshot of each profession. Before each environmental scan was finalised, the relevant professional association(s) for each participating profession was given the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft of the environmental scan. In addition to the individual environmental scans, a further document, Environmental Scan – State of Play, was developed. The Environmental Scan – State of Play summarises the themes arising from the full set of environmental scans and provides an overarching picture of issues relevant to the Victorian allied health workforce. The findings from this first stage of the Program will be used to prioritise areas of focus and data collection for subsequent stages of the work
