sustainability landcare indicators agriculture Agriculture, Land and Farm Management
This report reviews a draft set of indicators for sustainable agriculture developed by NSW DPI. The report uses a systematic approach to assess the draft sustainability indicators (SI) in terms of their ability to provide information that will help address core assessment questions. A brief review of literature surrounding the use and application of SI is provided along with some discussion of factors influencing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices at a farm level. A set of methods are developed for evaluating the draft SI. Strengths and weaknesses of the draft SI are examined using supporting arguments from the assessment process with reference to existing literature. Additions, amendments and redundancies are suggested. A revised list of SI is proposed for consideration (option A), along with an alternative method for selecting and organising SI (option B). A summary is provided which includes suggestions for visualising the data and maximising its value via a complementary staff survey.
