This report provides a summary of the RIRDC-sponsored one day workshop held on 22 August 2009 on Research Priorities for Native Species Bioenergy Crops. The workshop focused on determining why we need to research native species, what criteria we should use to select species for biofuels production and identification of the key research needs. The report highlights the need for future research into assessing the chemical composition of biomass from various native species with particular emphasis on understanding the chemical profile required for each conversion technology. It also makes a first attempt at defining a set of criteria to be used in selecting and evaluating biofuel species.
