Abstract
Consent education in Australian universities demands urgent attention. Recent reports document high levels of sexual harassment, abuse and assault in these settings between students and across all genders and point to the need for a review and reframing of consent education programs in the tertiary sector to address this problem. The need for more effective ways to educate on sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual violence, and consent in universities is well documented (Respect. Now.
Always, 2016; Change the Course: National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment, 2017; Red Zone Report, 2018; National Student Safety Survey, 2022). One of the biggest problems faced in the development and delivery of consent education is a disconnect between the problem itself, policies and programs aimed to address consent education in universities, and the ways in which these are performed and enacted in everyday life.
This project examines current consent education in one specific part of that sector, residential colleges, through the experiences of staff and students around issues of consent and consent education. Its aim, was to provide the sector with a renewed understanding of how relevant and effective consent education might best be delivered in this setting.
