Abstract
Natural disasters can significantly disrupt the lives of children and young people and the broader community, leaving in their wake trauma and uncertainty. Yet there is limited research evidence of the practices involved in community resilience building with a focus on children and young people’s
recovery and wellbeing.
The following report explores the outcomes of an evaluation of the Resilience Project, delivered by MacKillop Family Services (through their arm known as MacKillop Seasons) with funding from NSW Reconstruction Authority (formerly Resilience NSW), which incorporated 12 local government areas spread across three sites: northern, southern and central NSW. The project aimed to support individual, family, and community recovery and enhance future disaster preparedness in three regions of NSW that had experienced multiple and ongoing disasters by:
• supporting the delivery of Seasons for Growth and Stormbirds programs with children, young
people and family members in the three regions
• building the capacity of community networks to support the recovery and future disaster
preparedness in the identified regions, and
• listening and responding to children, young people, and other stakeholders about what they
need for recovery and future disaster preparedness.
Researchers from the Centre for Children and Young People at Southern Cross University evaluated the project from September 2021-June 2023 using a multi-case, mixed-method participatory approach. The evaluation drew on the diverse perspectives of MacKillop Seasons CROs and managers, and feedback from children, young people and facilitators (known as 'Companions') regarding the Seasons for Growth and Stormbirds programs, to identify: four practices associated with community resilience building, eight conditions that enabled and constrained practices, and five recommendations for improving community resilience building practice.
