Abstract

In late 2025, the Australian Health Ministers Meeting formally announced a timeline for change of the protected specialist title ‘podiatric surgeon’, to be replaced with ‘surgical podiatrist’. This marks a significant adjustment, given the medical profession has long been opposed to the title and practice of podiatric surgery. This commentary discusses the change in context and evaluates the likely impact on podiatric surgery, considering the broader national state policy agenda.
