Abstract
Interprofessional education (IPE) and practice (IPP) was implemented across two institutions, Southern Cross University and Bond University, providing nursing, allied health and medical students with a unique opportunity to come together virtually and practice IPE. Students engaged in learning from their own institution connected through the GigXR® cloud-based simulation platform, working together to manage the healthcare needs of a deteriorating patient through HoloScenarios®. Post scenario, students participated in a debrief to reflect on the scenario. The students commented that despite being at different locations, they felt like they were caring for the same patient. The scenario was perceived as authentic and was managed with a sense of real urgency. Effective communication and teamwork that focussed on patient-centred care was highlighted as a cornerstone of the educational scenario. It also enabled both the medical, nursing and allied health students to appreciate the care perspective from their own lens, whilst considering the contributions of other care providers to the patient care and management. This practice report showcases how medical, nursing and allied health students from different institutions, can learn with, about and from each other, exploring different perspectives of care, whilst working together to deliver the best possible interprofessional practice outcomes for a patient. It offers a case study in pedagogically driven simulation-based IPE (Sim-IPE) and provides insights for institutions seeking to connect learning across geographical barriers and find agile and innovative solutions to incorporate technology to connect learners within higher education.
