Abstract
Comedy and art are not the same thing. When art is associated with being funny it usually tends towards the deadpan rather than the laugh-out-loud, as if the artworld’s analytical, categorising tendencies dampen any outright joy with more circumspect assessments of the artist’s decision-making processes. The work of Yusi Zang epitomises this propensity for comedic art to invest in the taxonomies of humour rather than to be outright humorous. Instead of laughing, in front of Zang’s works we’re pressed to think about why all the elements somehow fit together even though they maybe shouldn’t.
