Abstract
The Letter to the Editor by Herrmann et al. (hereafter “H25”) is a confused and misguided attempt to defend an incorrect statistical practice that, due to its convenience, has become widely used in the sizeselectivity and gear comparison literature over the last decade. Specifically, H25 provide nonsensical arguments in an attempt to dismiss the
legitimate concerns raised by Millar and Broadhurst (2025; hereafter “MB25”) regarding the widespread misuse of bootstrap confidence bands for determining the presence of differences in the catch of fishing gears. This misuse arises due to the well-known multiple-comparisons problem, and consequently many of the claimed differences between gears that have been presented in the published literature may be spurious.
