Abstract
The effectiveness of herbal remedies in the treatment of psychiatric disorders: a narrative overview of current research
Background: The use of herbal remedies in the treatment of psychiatric disorders has gained increasing importance in recent years.
Method: This narrative overview summarizes current evidence from meta-analyses and systematic reviews on the effects and side effects of herbal remedies in the treatment of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders.
Results: In the treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive episodes, St. John’s wort is evidence-based and well tolerated. Interactions with other drugs should be considered. For other phytotherapeutic drugs, evidence is limited.
Conclusion: In the treatment of psychiatric disorders, phytotherapeutic drugs may present a good alternative or supplement to conventional psychotherapeutic drugs. In comparison, they show few side effects, are well tolerated and have a wide therapeutic range. Further randomized controlled studies are therefore warranted.
