A study is conducted to ascertain if a relationship exists between serum hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and depression in overweight and obese subjects and the capacity of supplemental vitamin D in impacting depressive symptoms. Overweight and obese subjects with low vitamin D status were found to have more depressive symptoms than subjects with higher vitamin D levels, and supplementation with high doses of vitamin D over a period of 12 months appears to ameliorate these symptoms, suggesting a possible causal relationship.
