Abstract
As an early career Year 2 teacher, Kirsty has been exploring ways of structuring the physical classroom environment to promote collaborative writing. Her goal was to enable children to collaborate when writing, both with their peers but also with her, their teacher. As space in the classroom can be limited, Kirsty found that certain classroom layouts restricted her access to the children. Additionally, some options stifled collaborative writing; while others made it difficult for Kirsty to be able to move around the room, or when she did, she was in a precarious position where she could not stand for too long. This situation meant that over the first half of the year, Kirsty had changed the desk configurations over ten times. What we outline in this article has been the most useful desk configuration for collaborative writing, and as such, Kirsty has maintained this in her classroom.
