Using a combined GLC/MS method, 23 species of red algae representing nine orders were examined for simple brominated phenols. A total of 13 brominated phenols were identified (MS, NMR and IR) from the Gigartinales, ClYptonemiales, Bonnemaisonailes and CeramiaJes. Seawater from the Polysiphonia brodiaei~zone also contained two bromophenols. The taxonomic and ecological implications are discussed.
