Developed from a grassroots level in close collaboration with Aboriginal Medical Services, SISTAQUIT is a project that is about to be trialled in 30 health services across Australia to assist pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in their efforts to quit smoking Tobacco usage has a particularly unpleasant history for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia. Inextricably linked with the nation's colonial past, today there is a stark contrast between the rates of smoking in Indigenous communities when compared to the wider population. While Australia as a whole is hailed as a world leader among OECD countries for its low prevalence of tobacco use, with around 13 per cent of adults smoking, the figure is closer to 40 per cent among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and 45 per cent amongst Indigenous pregnant women. This unfortunately reflects a wider trend in Australian health outcomes, with a long-standing dichotomy between the country's Aboriginal population and everyone else. However, in recent years there has been a concerted effort to 'close the gap', and one of the biggest factors to be targeted has been tobacco smoking. One researcher who knows this only too well is Associate Professor Gillian Gould of the University of Newcastle, Australia. She has spent much of her professional life working on projects to encourage people to quit smoking, particularly in Indigenous communities. Her current project, Supporting Indigenous Smokers To Assist Quitting (SISTAQUIT), is the culmination of years of effort and collaborative work with Aboriginal communities. Together with a large team that includes both Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, Gould has used a phased approach to move from a lengthy developmental stage to the fully formed products that they are now about to be trialled across Australia
