An investigation of four mutant lines of peas showed an inverse relationship between peroxidase activity and lignification of the pod membrane. From developmental studies, it appeared that the main role of peroxidase was in cellular growth and differentiation. It was suggested that peroxidase may predispose cells to lignification without being directly involved in the lignification process.
