Through an exploratory case study conducted in the Portuguese futsal senior national team, the present study aimed to investigate the role of the assistant coach in the context of high sports performance. Specifically, the study explored the current professional and personal skills of assistant-coaches from the viewpoint of the head-coach, the assistant-coach himself, and the player. The national coach, one of his assistant-coaches, and the team-captain participated in this investigation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, recorded by audio. Afterwards, data was transcribed and examined through thematic analysis. The findings demonstrated that in this technical staff the assistant-coach played the role of an active actor rather than a passive listener. All participants highlighted the importance and urgency of working through a collaborative approach and inside a democratic environment. The head-coach highlighted the personal skills of his assistant-coach, while the assistant-coach underlined his professional skills as the most important to contribute for developing team’s performance. In this regard, the player shared a broader perspective, by recognizing
the importance of both skills in an assistant-coach, namely since they are often the bridge between the head-coach and the players. In practical terms, it is suggested that head-coaches, as the responsible for the technical staff, start the shift of paradigm concerning on how assistant-coaches are viewed, through the building of opportunities tailored to their knowledge, so that their professional development and recognition can be potentiated.
