Abstract

Media Midwifery education Factual television Midwifery students Childbirth Career intention
•Student midwives experience a shift in perspective and viewing habits as they adopt the values of the profession.•The role of television in informing career intention was unclear but participants suggest that misrepresentations could lead to unrealistic expectations and contribute to attrition.•Childbirth is highly-dramatised by mainstream television but media can have a positive role in raising awareness and challenging stigma.•Television clips are acceptable and potentially valuable educational resource but need careful introduction due to prevailing attitudes in midwifery.
