Two experiments with business tourists in Coffs Harbour required the visitors to draw their mental maps of the city. The cognitive images exhibited the five components commonly found in such sketch mapping exercises: paths, nodes, edges, landmarks and districts. The content of the maps was found to be influenced by two personality traits: locus of control and activity. These personality traits were also found to have a bearing on the style of the mental map.
