Abstract
Would it surprise you if children today could name more Pokemon characters than local flora and fauna? Would you consider that a problem? Over twenty years ago, Balmford et al (2002) cautioned on this prevailing predicament. The gap in awareness of biodiversity is problematic because it signals a growing disconnect from the natural world-limiting capacity to value, care for, and protect the environments on which life depends, and reflecting a cultural shift that privileges manufactured or digital worlds over the living one.
