Abstract
Technological, demographic, and economic changes within healthcare have witnessed the emergence of a new type of ward patient, the critically ill ward patient. These patients located in hospital wards are potentially at risk of serious deterioration. Increasingly the management and care of the critically ill ward patient has been labelled suboptimal. Studies have demonstrated that ward patients exhibit premonitory signs of adverse events which may be observed but not acted on by nursing and medical staff. 1 , 2 , 3 However, treatment and management of this highly vulnerable patient group is often delayed and this may impact on patient morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is imperative that patient management in the ward setting is optimised by more judicious identification of critically ill ward patients.
