Abstract
Although Fraser and Trinder (1994) present a case for a change of name from "surveying" to "geomatics" or "geomatic engineering", assessment of the work by Onsrud and Pinto (1993) reveal that there is no case for the change.
Onsrud and Pinto show that when the field of surveying is described to students, "surveying" is a more attractive name than "geomatics." This indicates that the profession needs to publicise the field of surveying rather than change its name.
The claim by Fraser and Trinder that a "cohort of low quality surveying students" is entering universities is wrongly based on the Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) score and is misleading.
