Aim: To determine those factors that affect identification and subsequent care of women with intellectual disability during pregnancy. Whilst it is part of a larger study, this paper reports on those issues from the perspectives of maternity health care providers. Method: Qualitative research using single episode focus groups was undertaken within one regional and three rural NSW hospitals. Participants included a range of maternity health providers. Results: Grounded Theory methodology elicited the major themes and core categories from the focus group data: factors that acted as either barriers or facilitators to identifying WWID during pregnancy, and the provision of suitable maternity care for these women. Conclusion: This research will be invaluable in assisting clinicians, healthcare planners/educators and organisations develop appropriate models of pregnancy care that meet the needs of WWID. Midwives are clearly situated to develop close supportive relationships with these vulnerable women and make a difference to their lives as parents.
