Abstract
Herbal Medicines in Children and Adolescents – A Narrative Overview
Background: Herbal medicines are particularly regarded as an alternative or complement to conventional pharmaceuticals. Due to the high usage among children the purpose of this review was to identify evidence for herbal therapy in pediatrics.
Methods: Medline/PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane Library were searched through 15 July 2016. Only randomized controlled trials investigating herbal medicines in children and adolescents (age 0 to 18 years) were eligible.
Results: 86 randomized controlled trials with a total of 8.516 participants were included. The sample size in each study ranged from 5 to 647 participants. Gastroenterological diseases, dermatological diseases and respiratory tract infections were most commonly studied.
Conclusion: Despite the high prevalence of herbal medicine use in pediatric practice, only few randomized trials with small sample sizes are available. This overview shows the areas in which further research is needed.
