Abstract

Significant unrecognised drivers of cardiovascular health are the social determinants of health. The context of one's sociodemographic conditions inclusive of birth, conditions of where we live, grow, become educated, work or age, in combination with the structures and systems at play, either privileges or prohibits access for women to the highest standard of cardiovascular surgical health care. This commentary calls for health care professionals to understand health equity in the context of cardiovascular surgery, reframing it to include an intersectional lens and the social determinants of health to reform cardiovascular surgery care.
