Abstract
In The Real Facts of Life, Margaret Jackson sets herself the ambitious task of tracing the politicisation of women around issue of sexuality from the mid-Victorian period up until the Second World War. The book traces the feminist campaigns against the double standard of sexual morality, explores differences in feminist theories concerning sexuality and examines the divisions in feminism concerning issues of sexual freedom. This discussion is framed by a wider analysis of the relationship between feminist discourses concerning sexuality and what scientific experts, such as Havelock Ellis, were saying about sexuality.
