Abstract

Green construction (GC) is increasingly recognized as a key pathway towards sustainable built environment transformation; however, its implementation at the construction site level remains fragmented and insufficiently understood. Existing research has largely focussed on strategic planning and design stages, providing limited empirical evidence on how education, barriers and promotion mechanisms interact on construction sites. This study addresses this gap in the Australian construction context through a questionnaire survey (n = 97) analysed using exploratory factor analysis, reliability testing and correlation analysis. The results identify four categories of barriers, two categories of promotion mechanisms and two categories of education factors, indicating that constraints on GC adoption extend beyond site-level practices to organizational, technical and economic dimensions. Promotion mechanisms are found to rely on coordinated organizational arrangements and supportive regulatory conditions that facilitate resource allocation and innovation uptake. Importantly, the study proposes a knowledge-skills-abilities framework that structures the knowledge and competency requirements necessary for effective GC implementation. Overall, the findings provide an empirically grounded implementation framework that integrates education, barriers and promotion mechanisms, offering practical insights for enhancing GC adoption at the construction site level.
