Abstract
An urban sustainability framework is proposed for the strategic planning and assessment of the location of land-use activities and transportation facilities that incorporates the three pillars of sustainability: environmental stewardship, social equity and economic efficiency. Part of this framework is illustrated with the interactions amongst urban housing markets, labor markets and transportation linkages, in particular automobile travel and greenhouse gas emissions. The framework is applied to a case study of metropolitan Sydney using census data for a twenty year period, and the results are used to assess the effectiveness of post-war strategic planning
in metropolitan Sydney.
