Abstract
This study used a qualitative approach to explore workplace bullying within the Australian hospitality industry. It considered the perspectives of ten frontline and management staff who identified 19 bullying incidents and were able to discuss the causes and consequences of this for employees and organizations. Two clear themes emerged as causes of bullying: personal characteristics of the victim and bully and hospitality industry characteristics. Overall participants suggested that low levels of personal power paired with poor leadership create a power imbalance that can lead to negative organizational consequences. Few participants felt comfortable or supported to report bullying.
