The extent of the pre-European riparian rainforest correlated strongly with the riverbank alluvial soil type. However, two exceptions suggest that soil moisture and fire may be more important.
A conceptual model of the location of rainforest suballiances on the floodplain levees was generated.
A comparison of aerial photographs (1942 vs 2001) showed that there has been an increase in vegetation in the narrow riparian zone and that the streams are moving and becoming narrower. Forest present in the riparian zone consisted mainly of a native overstorey with a weedy understorey. Species diversity in the riparian zone was low.
